Connie (Wood) Smith age 69 gained her heavenly wings in the early morning hours of May 17, 2026, surrounded by family and friends. Connie was born to parents William (Bill) Wood and M. Sue (Alexander) Wood on February 12, 1957 in Monticello, Illinois. Connie graduated from Monticello High School and later married Gary Smith in November of 1993. Connie was a loving soul, the life of all gatherings and like her dad, knew no strangers. She spent over 40 years serving as a supervisor and coach for adults with special needs. She was loved by so many for her kind heart, her willingness to help with anything whenever needed as well as her unselfish care and love for everyone. She loved shopping, especially with her mom and sisters and was always quick to point out the clearance rack section in every store. She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and was overjoyed when her brother-in-law Lee asked her to take his place at was arguably one of the best World Series games of all time with her sister Becky in 2011. Connie was preceded in death by her father Bill Wood, her mother and step-dad Sue & “Grandpa” Garry Buhrmann, husband Gary Smith and step-daughter Lisa Smith. Connie is survived by step-children Kathleen (Tim) Jennings of Mahomet, Illinois, Dianne (Nishal) Ramsurrun of Urbana, Illinois, William Smith (Yolotzin Herto) of Baltimore, Maryland. Son: Joe (Brittany) Smith of Lombard, Illinois, Daughter: Jessica (Mike) August of Frankfort, llinois, Sisters: Becky Wiley (Lee Melton) of Flora, Illinois Sherri Wood (Dave Persinger) of Flora, Illinois. A public visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M., followed by a celebration of life service for Connie at 1:00 P.M., on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at the Bement United Methodist Church, 249 N. Piatt St., Bement. Following the services there will be a luncheon served at the church. It was Connie’s wishes to be cremated, thus there will be no burial service.
