Eric McCoppin Obituary

Eric Justin McCoppin, 46, of Champaign, IL., passed away at 11:45 A.M., on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M., on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ivesdale, IL. Services will follow at 11:00 A.M., on Saturday at the church. The Rev. Father Patrick O'Neal and Deacon Jim Brewer will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Ivesdale. Memorial contributions can be made to the Champaign County Humane Society.

Eric was born on September 8, 1977 in Champaign, IL., a son of George Joseph and Katherine Wheeler McCoppin, Jr. He is survived by his father; George Joseph McCoppin, Jr. of Savoy, IL., siblings; Jamie (Dave) Pavek of Broomfield, CO., Todd McCoppin of Ft. Collins, CO. and Aaron (Katy) Thompson of Champaign, IL. He was preceded in death by his mother.

As a young kid, Eric loved an audience, whether it was through being a spelling bee champion or as a fifth-grade playwright of “Mars is Missing.” Later in life, Eric turned his love of theatrics into a love of movies, TV, and music. Eric enjoyed gathering with others for a good meal, a good laugh, sometimes a good movie, and even playing a round or two (of ten) of Magic the Gathering.

Eric's first love, however, was his family and friends, including but not limited to Amanda Lindsey, Jennifer Kinyon and partner Kevin Erickson. Eric was a son, a brother, a nephew, an uncle, a cousin, and a friend. He was also devoted to his two dogs, Dexter and Dewey.

In Eric's favorite song, Don't Dream It's Over by Crowded House, the opening lyrics talk about finding freedom within and freedom without. Eric lived by this credence. Eric was kind and thoughtful of others. During his own heath battle with cancer, he sought to comfort and uplift others through their own battles. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his attachment to Care Bears, Disney movies, 80's music and movies and his love of travel and reading.
